A Server Rant

I am so excited to share the next generation of amazing innovation in online gaming server technology – match making. This system, employed most recently by Infinity Ward in Modern Warfare 2 is heaped full of false promises and a healthy side of bullshit. Match making has worked, and I use the term worked loosely, on console systems. More often than not this system seems to lead PC users to disconnection, disappointment and dismay. Frankly it pisses me right off. Giving some anonymous asshole the ability to host a game on the same computer he is playing on, and then lag the shit out of the game or better yet disconnect from the internet if he is losing is just such a fantastic idea. Sarcasm aside I have some serious issues with the direction that modern games are headed online.

I was hoping that Bad Company 2 would be the redemption of war based games online, EA decided to release the dedicated server option to a small group of select server hosts, this just seems unfair, how about some price competition? Having designed slim servers on the valve platform (think a 32 slot 500 FPS TF2 server running in Windows Server 2008 with 512 MB of RAM and 1/8th of the processing power given to a 2.4 ghz P4 with 34 connected hosts, an average latency of 8 ms and no game play latency for players) I was sorely disappointed to see the shit performance offered by so many servers when Bad Company 2 released. I have heard that performance has improved, and hell the game is nearly fun, but I have yet to gag back the near vomit and try again, my bullshit stick still needs to dry. With these games coming out back to back, each company sure they have found the ultimate answer to online game hosting (42?), and both companies missing the mark by miles.

I am left to seriously wonder if we'll ever see something as simple as the CS 1.6/CS:S/TF2 option again in the future or if we're left to the mercy of game-free executives trying to find a “cost-effective” way to provide shit service for what could have been great games.

MW2 Stimulus Pack
Written by Remus

Just heard that the new map pack for Modern Warfare 2 will be released for Xbox on Tuesday. It is going to cost 1200 Microsoft pts. That's about $15.

Yeah, I know.

Robert Bowling, an Infinity Ward Community Manager stated that Activision was responsible for the pricing of the DLC, and that IW wasn't involved in the decision making process there. All IW gets to do is design the DLC. No specific price has been stated for PC or PS3 versions, but I think it's safe to assume it's about $15.

The "Stimulus Package" will contain 3 new maps and 2 maps from Modern Warfare. Gonna be honest, if I'm paying $15, I want some more weapons and maybe a few perks or something, dammit!

Eh, who am I kidding? I'll probably fold and buy it like the rest of the gaming community.

... Jerks...

BOOM

WAHOkay guys, so it’s been a while. Things have finally calmed down a bit and I can get back to working on this site once in a while.

So, first things first. It was a while ago, but I did mention trying Aion, Champions Online and Star Trek Online. I have tried all three and I’ll write quick verdicts on all three in a sec.

Also, a review of Mass Effect 2. Managed to get my hands on it for a while. You’re jealous, I know.

List form is the name of the game for these mini reviews…

  1. Champions Online: Not great. Solid idea, but poor execution. It was cool to have the transport modes (like flying and speed and such) so early, but the game play itself got stale very quickly. Rush in, punch, punch, kick, power punch, repeat. Or, shoot, shoot shoot shoot, shoot shoot, other shot. You get the idea. I wouldn’t recommend it. Unless you really liked City of Heroes.
  2. Aion: I see the merit. I really do. Great concept, but not my style. I may have come into it expecting a little more than yet another WoW clone. Cuz that’s basically what it is. Just… prettier. I’ll give them that. Aion is awfully pretty. Too much anime style for my tastes however.
  3. Star Trek Online: Playing the Open Beta. It’s pretty good so far, but it kinda feels like the ground-based stuff was an afterthought. The space fighting is very Star Trek. The ground fighting feel like a dumbed down third person tactical shooter. I’m sure they’re planning on making it feel more solid, but for now, ground combat is not the fun part for me. I would definitely recommend this for all Star Trek fans and space combat aficionados.

On to Mass Effect 2. Link to the review here.

I hope to be able to update more often from here on out. No promises though.

All these things I cannot do without…

zomg!

Well, we've had to take down the TF2 server. Long story.

Also, I dont really have the time of late to update the site, as is obvious. We're workin on something big, and hopefully we'll be back to full speed soon.

A few pointers:

  • Champions Online comes out soon, gonna give it a shot and do a quick review if I can.
  • Aion also comes out soon, same story.
  • Trying to get into the Star Trek Online beta. No luck yet.

WoW: Cataclysm was announced a lil bit ago. Here's the site. Those bastards at Blizzard keep me coming back for more. I swear there's cocaine in the game or something... Virtual crack. Thanks Penny-Arcade. Gabe knows where I'm comin' from.

Takin' what we're givin' cuz we're workin' for a livin'.
