Battlefield 1943

I remember Battlefield 1942. Vaguely. I honestly never got into Battlefield 2 or Battlefield 2142; I think Battlefield Vietnam ruined it for me. Played both of those games quite a bit. A group of friends and I used to team up and wreak havoc.

Well, EA has announced today that they are working on Battlefield 1943. Yay for yet another WWII game. Huzzah. Maybe you can’t see the pool of sarcasm accumulating beneath me due to this being text and not video, but I don’t entirely trust that another WWII game is really what this world needs right now. Don’t worry, I’m not going to write it off just yet. So far all I’ve seen is some tidbits and a few screen shots. This might be a “wait and see” situation.

The demo for Halo Wars is out. I’ll give it a shot and let you know. I seriously doubt the validity of an RTS on a console. I just can’t imagine the controls being anything but awkward and clunky. I really want this to work. I’ve been hungering for a Halo RTS. Hungering. Like a zombie. A Halo RTS Zombie. Here’s hoping. More later.

I could play this for hours. Harder than it looks. Maybe I'm easily amused.

Tr2n...

So there’s a bit of a rumor going around about the new Tron movie that’s supposedly coming out in 2011.

First off, let me just say that I don’t know anything about Tron. I don’t know what the story is, I don’t really get why people like it. It looks… for lack of a less juvenile term, dumb. Anyways, there’s a sequel coming out. It’s called Tr2n. That’s really all I know and pretty much all I can find about it. That and that Olivia Wilde might be in it.

There are whispers about a game in development as well. To be released along side the movie. Here’s my wonder about this: WHY GOD WHY?!? Haven’t people learned yet? Movies don’t make good games, and Games very rarely make good movies. When’s the last time you played a game that was based on a movie, and didn’t turn it off after 5 or 10 minutes? I pretty much stay completely away from that crap. There is no reason. None at all.

My advice to the Game Companies out there: LEAVE THE MOVIES TO HOLLYWOOD! You guys got a good thing going, no need to bring tinsel town into this.

This is not to say that I don’t love pretty games that feel like you’re watching a movie as you play. That’s great. I remember playing Mass Effect for the first time. It was like interacting with a cheesey 80’s Sci-Fi movie, and I loved every friggin’ second of it. Same with Heavenly Sword, now there’s a pretty game.

Wow, talk about a tangent.

Summery: Tr2n movie, probably not a great idea. Tr2n game, even worse idea.

Thank you, Disney.

Review: DoW II Multiplayer Beta
Written by Remus

Alright, so I got a chance to play around with the Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War II Multiplayer Beta this past weekend, and I figured I would do a quick review of what I've seen so far.

If you've played the first Dawn of War or any of its expansions, you will be very familiar with base building. I know I spent a decent amount of my time designing efficient yet effective base designs, as well as defensive patterns that could hold of the most massive of attacks. If you've played the DoWII beta, you know how annoying it is that suddenly, none of that matters. That's right, no more base building. Now you just start out with a single building that can be upgraded to support better units. any base building comes along with capturing power nodes. And all you get to build there are power generators. My guess is that the designers were going for a more tactical game with this change of game play.

The Commander unit is a little more important than it used to be, as well as more powerful. When you start a game (a multiplayer game, anyways), you get to choose from 3 commanders of any of the 4 races available: Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, and Tyranids. I know, I was surprised too. All this time, Relic refused to add Tyranids to the game, and now they're one of the first playable races.

Generally, there are 3 different types of commander: Offensive, Defensive, and Support. For instance, the Space marines have the Force Commander (offense), the Apothecary(support healer), and Tech Marine (defense). I admit I haven't had a lot of time to play, so I played with the Force Commander most.

Before I go any further, I just want to comment on how pretty this game is. The graphics are nicely detailed, and the particle effects are very well done. They did a good job of making the game look great while keeping it light weight enough that you don't get bogged down in the graphics.

The game play is a little tricky at first, but you adapt quickly enough. It would seem that individual squads are a little more important now, and a single squad can tip the balance of a skirmish if you play it right.

As for the Commander units, they are much more fun to play with that before. Used to be that the commander was just another powerful unit to throw at the enemy. Now he seems actually important. They are pretty versatile, as well. You can upgrade or change their wargear loadout to change the way they fight or effect the abilities they have. The wrong wargear in the wrong situation can ruin the game, so there is a whole new level of strategy involved in the use of your commander.

As I understand it, the single player campaign will be a little different, so I'm excited to see what that brings us. So far, DOWII is shaping up to be more than simply a sequel of a successful franchise. I'm not entirely sure I'm on board yet. I'll give it a little time before I make my final judgments, though.

Rumor: ME3 and stuff
Written by Remus

As I'm sure most of you know, the game Mass Effect was a largely popular Xbox360 game. I know I wiled away many an hour delving into the intense world of Commander Sheppard, exploring every class, every play style and every difficulty setting.

EA's purchase of Bioware meant a few questions to be answered: What will happen with the new games? Will it be a trilogy still? What about other platforms?

As we saw from Bio Shock, EA had nothing but success porting the game to PS3, making it into a multi-platform game. I think its safe to assume that there will be a Mass Effect port to PS3. As well as the sequels being made for at least Xbox and PS3. PC too, if they're smart.

I don't know about anyone else, but this was the first I had heard about ME being a trilogy. Good to hear, in my opinion. I enjoyed Mass Effect more than any other game I had played in years. Here's hoping they don't ruin a perfectly good franchise.
